Dining in the 50's

Now fifty six years later what does one do with the beautiful china, crystal and sterling silver we received as wedding gifts. I know we should probably be enjoying it instead of hiding it away where it is difficult to get to because of all our other "stuff". We have let life become so casual that we have forgotten the beauty and pleasure of elegance.
What a beautiful place setting. You dinnerware still looks in pristine condition. Wonderful shot.

Lovely shot and setting

How gorgeous - put it in an easily accessible place and use it! Your shot is so nicely done and the dinner set is just beautiful.

Sue, you really hit home with this one...... Lovely photo and table setting.. But that's my dilemma too. I have a beautiful 12 piece place setting of Lenox china with extra serving platter, dishes, etc. and also a complete set of 12 crystal goblets. (I went for a good set of stainless steel silverware in 1960, not sterling). Neither my daughter nor my daughter in law wants it. Like you say, we're too casual today. My china and a couple of the goblets are in my china cabinet, so they can be seen. But they have only been used on special occasions and holidays for 54 years. I guess I should start using them for every day. How about you? What are you going to do with yours? (Mine were $21.00 a place setting in 1960...... the dinner plate alone, now, is $55.00 to $60.00.)

When I decided to use this photo I had you in mind as I knew you could identify with it. I was hoping you would respond. Like you, neither of our two daughters or daughter in law are interested in any of it. Because of the silver on both the crystal and china I cannot put it in the dishwasher ............am I lazy or what! At this point the "kids" will just have to deal with it at some point. The china is Royal Doulton and we have ten place settings. Sure would enjoy having what it's worth in $$ and I would buy a new camera! Just kidding.

Nice setting. After the great fire in Oakland years ago, one of the neighbors who lost it all commented, "Always use your best China."

@mzbull
Wise words from this lady and I really should take them to heart.

Lovely capture and setting.

@essiesue Haha! That's interesting that you were thinking of me when you posted it. I'm honored..... I would really like to know what my china is worth today too. If I don't try to sell it (doubt it and, yes, I guess our kids will have to deal with it.) I'm sorry things have gone so casual now too. Love the formality of a nicely set table. (I put our good dishes in the dishwasher....... Probably shouldn't, but........)

Lovely photo. The processing adds to the elegance. Just beautiful.

Sue, it would be a pleasure to sit at table with this setting in front of me. A significant proportion of the pleasure of dining is the presentation both of the table and the meal itself... 'dressing for dinner' has a part to play in the dining experience as well. Use it and enjoy it... in this day and age we could all do with a bit more elegance in our lives.

I agree, creative shot.

When my Mom passed away in 2001, I was left her china, glassware and silverware!! I have absolutely no place for any of it, nor would I use it as we don't entertain that much! So, what I did, was take one complete setting and gave them to my mom's grandchildren. It was a complete set of 16 and it just so happened she had 16 grandchildren. Each of her grandchildren has something of hers.
These are beautiful dishes and a wonderful set! Now, if I had bought them and no one wanted them, I would sell them and get a new camera!!! FAV!

I know what you mean Sue. Our's is in the attic. Perhaps I need to give it five minutes of fame by taking it's picture! I like the way you've composed this picture.

What a lovely set! I think this happens to a lot of people, but as long as you know it's there that's the important thing! - Lucy

You could send all the sterling silver to me and I would add it to my collect. (Wink). Isn't a shame how this is never used these days. Lovely capture and framing.
