I went on a hike today with my kids in Red Rock Canyon. It started out cloudy and by the time we were part-way around the trail, the winds picked up and the thunder rolled! We started hoofing it back partly running/walking to make it back to the car before the rain came! I love hearing the thunder roll through the mountains! We made it back to the car while it was sprinkling!
Beautiful! This photo has a sense of movement to it. It's as though you're being sucked right into the center of the photo. Mountain thunderstorms can come up quickly and be pretty scary/dangerous. We got caught on top of a mountain once (we were riding 4-wheeled ATVs ) and had to take refuge under fallen trees when the hail started pounding us. It was a bit scary!
@tkeen Thank you Toni! @dejongdd Thank you Deb! Yes, we were getting a little nervous, especially when we were on top of a bluff coming down and we were the highest point! I thought, well now we're the perfect target for the crazy lighting!!
Two years ago a dear friend of my son's girlfriend was struck and killed by lightning while riding his bike in the mountains near Westcliffe. He was a youth leader at a Christian camp and was the one who talked the head camp counselor into continuing with the bike ride as planned even though everyone was tired and most wanted to stay in. Such a sad story.
@dejongdd Deb, that is so horrible! I often get pretty worried when the storms move in here, because (as you probably know) this area is inevitable for strikes hitting the ground and people!
@kiwichick@mimosa@kerristephens@hjbenson Thank you so much! @dvarey Thank you Diana. This is actually south of the Garden, off of HWY 24. It's a separate area that the city just recently opened up for hiking (I believe last summer).
