I don't know much about taking them, but I think this is a very cool night scene. I like the place you shot from, and the building you chose. I think there is a lot to look at, which makes the photo interesting.
Robyn, I have never attempted a night scene myself so cannot comment technically but I like this shot. The curvy fountain leads deeper into the shot. Good one!
It's not bad! Just had a little squiz at your settings … is that 1/30 sec hand held or with a tripod? And did you choose your settings manually or were they auto? There are so many options to play with just with ISO/shutter/aperture and even white balance … I am no expert but I have taken loads of night shots and at least half of them were rubbish! I can't see anything wrong with this shot - it doesn't look blurry even at 1/30 sec? Anything in particular you were wanting feedback on?
@aliha Thanks Alison. It was handheld as we were doing a pick-up at the airport and I'm not used to dragging a tripod around. The settings were mainly manual with the focus on shutter speed. I really want to know if anyone has ideas for improving and what to watch for in night shots as this is my first experiment.
If this is so good on your first attempt, how good is it going to get? I am puzzled by the content, that is the Molten gold light dropping off the path looking thingy - excuse my ignorance
you'll have to start carrying that tripod now - nighttime = tripod time! Great composition, and good for hand held. A little bit of post-processing to bring up the detail in the shadows and its a winner.
a great first try! nice curves and great focus...if you want a star effect on the lights that some night shots have...try a longer exposure time next time.
ps...just read the comments above...if you go for the long exposure time...then a tripod is a must. I am not trying to be a know it all....I am still working at night shots too.
@daz77@vickisfotos Thanks for your helpful comments. That's exactly the kind of feedback I was after. I'll have to start carrying the tripod around so I can get the longer exposure and some more practice. I'm sure my partner will be excited with the extra gear to be dragged around!
This is a great night shot for hand held. You must have a very steady hand. If you want to avoid camera movement though especailly on night shots and you don't have a tripod with you try and perch your camera on something solid to focus the shot and then set the self timer to 2 secs and then when you press the shutter you won't get camera movement becfause the 2 secs will give you hands free.
@dannydavies@onewing Thanks Danny and Babs. I used to shake all the time with slow shots, but seem to be improving. I think taking a number of shots to select from helps as well. Thanks for the fav Danny, and the self timer idea is extremely helpful Babs. Thanks again
