My first attempt at a night scene - feedback welcome
I don't know much about taking them, but I think this is a very cool night scene. I like the place you shot from, and the building you chose. I think there is a lot to look at, which makes the photo interesting.

Robyn, I have never attempted a night scene myself so cannot comment technically but I like this shot. The curvy fountain leads deeper into the shot. Good one!

It's not bad! Just had a little squiz at your settings … is that 1/30 sec hand held or with a tripod? And did you choose your settings manually or were they auto? There are so many options to play with just with ISO/shutter/aperture and even white balance … I am no expert but I have taken loads of night shots and at least half of them were rubbish! I can't see anything wrong with this shot - it doesn't look blurry even at 1/30 sec? Anything in particular you were wanting feedback on?

Holy smokes! Amazing! Great job IMO!

@hayleymolloycook Thanks Hayley. I'm glad you found it interesting and not overpowering.

@dibzgreasley Thanks Debs, the curves were what appealed to me initially

@aliha Thanks Alison. It was handheld as we were doing a pick-up at the airport and I'm not used to dragging a tripod around. The settings were mainly manual with the focus on shutter speed. I really want to know if anyone has ideas for improving and what to watch for in night shots as this is my first experiment.

First attempt? This is a gorgeous night shot!

If this is so good on your first attempt, how good is it going to get? I am puzzled by the content, that is the Molten gold light dropping off the path looking thingy - excuse my ignorance
March 31st, 2014
@ethelperry It's a new water feature, with water rippling along the raised 'path' over yellow lights

@lorenaavalos Thanks so much Lorena

Brilliant Robyn, I don't have a tripod so my my low light shots never make it to 365!

@flyrobin Thank you for your explanation. It must look rather good seeing it up close in context.

@robrazer Thank you. I have a tripod, but never take it with me and am only just learning to use it for shots at home.

WOW Adelaide Airport has changed a lot since the last time I was there :) It looks gorgeous at night! And well done on the night capture :)

Lovely capture ...

you'll have to start carrying that tripod now - nighttime = tripod time! Great composition, and good for hand held. A little bit of post-processing to bring up the detail in the shadows and its a winner.

A fabulous composition. Fav

For an evening scene, you did great. Love all the shapes and fountain front & center. It has a great flow to it (the photo as well as the fountain).

Looks great, I love your composition!

a great first try! nice curves and great focus...if you want a star effect on the lights that some night shots have...try a longer exposure time next time.
April 1st, 2014
ps...just read the comments above...if you go for the long exposure time...then a tripod is a must. I am not trying to be a know it all....I am still working at night shots too.

@clarek @gigiflower @pdulis @thresheg @daweenie @pittcj17 @kiscsillag @overalvandaan @lealady @ninaganci @radiogirl @tw @wannabe @bella_ss Thanks for the lovely comments and favs. I obviously have more practice to do but appreciate your support

@daz77 @vickisfotos Thanks for your helpful comments. That's exactly the kind of feedback I was after. I'll have to start carrying the tripod around so I can get the longer exposure and some more practice. I'm sure my partner will be excited with the extra gear to be dragged around!

Can't fault it Robyn, you were lucky to get this shot with out the tripod. 1/30 is pretty slow. fav.
April 1st, 2014
@flyrobin yes, it is a bother to carry all the stuff and maybe not even use it...but so worth it if you do need it.

This is a great night shot for hand held. You must have a very steady hand. If you want to avoid camera movement though especailly on night shots and you don't have a tripod with you try and perch your camera on something solid to focus the shot and then set the self timer to 2 secs and then when you press the shutter you won't get camera movement becfause the 2 secs will give you hands free.

@dannydavies @onewing Thanks Danny and Babs. I used to shake all the time with slow shots, but seem to be improving. I think taking a number of shots to select from helps as well. Thanks for the fav Danny, and the self timer idea is extremely helpful Babs. Thanks again
