Contemplation

“The world can only be grasped by action, not by contemplation. The hand is the cutting edge of the mind.”

My get-pushed partner (Brianna @lilminimonka) challenged me to capture a candid photo of a person or group of people. There was a re-enactment of the Battle of Osawatomie today and the actor in the straw hat was the doctor, who was contemplating whether to "amputate" the leg of a "wounded" participant. Since these actors are used to photographers, I didn't have to ask to take a photo. Two things I found challenging were lighting, because the participants tended to stay in the shade, and avoiding background distractions.

The original Battle of Osawatomie took place on August 30, 1856 when 250-300 Border Ruffians led by John W. Reid and Rev. Marvin White attacked the city of Osawatomie, Kansas. John W. Reid was intent on destroying free state settlements and then moving on to Topeka and Lawrence to do more of the same. John Brown first got word that the group was coming when they shot his son Frederick. Brown with 40 or so men tried to defend the town against the pro-slavery partisans, causing heavy casualties before being forced to withdraw; the town of Osawatomie was then looted and burned. This was one event in series of skirmishes between abolitionists and pro-slavery Missourians in what has been known as Bleeding Kansas.

Nice shot. This makes very interesting reading. I am looking forward to photographing a re-enactment in a couple of weeks back home in Yorkshire. Meanwhile, I am your Get Pushed partner for the week, Kim. I will be travelling for the next 6 days so you may come up with a challenge with that in mind. I would like you to create a montage that epitomises your daily life.

Wonderful shot with an interesting if sad story behind it. The actors really seem to be into their roles, and you got a great portrait of them, fav for me. I imagine that what happened to his son made John Brown more adamant (if possible) in his views.
