Unfortunately, on April Fool's Day, a county employee somehow hit two of the supports while pulling a mower across the bridge. The City issued the following notice: "An employee of Miami County accidentally hit parts of the bridge and caused damage to some support pillars. The County is awaiting an inspection to gauge the level of damage and to determine the repairs that will be required. Once there’s a plan for repairs, we will be able to provide residents with a better calendar for when the bridge might be accessible again."
Thankfully for me, I do not travel this route to get to work.
A little history for anyone who is interested:
This historic bridge, known as the Creamery Bridge, is on the National Register of Historic Places and underwent extensive repair in 2013, but it is now closed until further notice. "This beautiful Marsh rainbow arch bridge includes as its central span one of the larger and taller Marsh arch spans in Kansas, which is complimented by a shorter span (which lacks overhead bracing) at each end. This arrangement is greatly appealing from an aesthetic standpoint. This bridge has also been very nicely rehabilitated, and is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Kansas."
