This crested Mallard was strutting along. Same duck as in the previous close up photo. I was not really happy with the way this one turned out.

I was wondering about these crested ducks, so I did a bit of research: "The crested gene in these ducks is linked to a lethal condition during incubation. Ducklings carrying both genes (homozygous) for the crest do not survive to hatch. Of those that do hatch, typically 1/3 of them will not have crests. It is easy for breeders to see how the crests will develop on the newly hatched duckling" Guess they are prized for striking looks =) http://www.domestic-waterfowl.co.uk/crested.htm
@sitiodown I researched them also, when I posted a pic of a different one some time back. One page said that they most likely end up in duck ponds after Easter when children get tired of their new Easter pets. Evidently breeders do try to breed them to have the crest.
