Headlight

11.11 pm: This is the building I work in - I turned around one last time and took this shot before going to the railway station after my shift was done.

I'm fascinated by night time street photography but hardly ever get a real good shot. After reading a thread here on the forum (@islawight) I tried bumping up my ISO - according to street photographer Eric Kim a grainy picture is better than a blurry one. I have to agree with him but the amount of grain is bothering me nevertheless. Practising on...

[edit] The shot looks less grainy on here than it does in the original version :)
i love it!

Well, this is a very nice pic!

Nice night shot...doesn't look grainy to me (although I am viewing it on an iphone lol)

Yes, even with traditional 35mm film. the higher ISO goes grainy. This is a great shot! I like how the light brings out the brickwork on the ground.

I don't really notice the graininess, just the headlights glaring back at me.

...nice catch by the way.

great capture

I love the lighting effect in this shot!

I can't really tell that it's all that grainy, I'd also like to try night shots once it gets a little warmer! Good job!

Nice stuff - the added white car with red graphics adds an interesting touch.

Hardly notice that its grainy. I like the shadows being cast by the headlight. Looking forward to seeing more of your night time street shots!

well done !!

Hé, ook een nachtshot! Mooi dat tegenlicht, net een spotlight in een theatershow...

Great result! I am like you, a bit "afraid" of grainy aspect. When it is with others' pictures I find it beautiful, but when it is with mine, I don't like them!

@liannemetter @viranod @ts @jodimuli Thank you so much :)

@andycoleborn @flygirl @lislee75 @attraversi Thank you! I am pleased to notice that this shot looks much less grainy on here than it did on my computer :)

@smallenburg @attraversi @orangecrush @5unflow3r Thank you! The headlights were sort of a lucky catch - the driver of the car tried to make a three point turn which took some time. I already had my camera out and set at 800 ISO so all I had to do was press the button :)

@scatcat I have exactly the same thing. I don't mind a bit of grain in other people's shots but with my own shots I have this image in mind and I get a bit disappointed if the shot doesn't turn out that exact way.

@thebluegnu Thanks! It's a police car - I agree it adds something extra to this shot.

You do night and urban very well! I agree for some photos grainy is good, as long as it was intended/unavoidable

Bep
Ik vind het net een scene uit een film!

Night time photography is so hard, I like the shadows on the cobbled street in this shot.
March 11th, 2011
Your shots are always fantastic, Judith.
March 11th, 2011
I like the way this turned out--I like the street reflection
March 11th, 2011
@araminta Thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate it. In my opinion grainy can work really well on some b&w shots but those are not my forte.

@gijsje Dat komt door die politieauto denk ik!

@shantwin @clarissajohal thank you both. I liked the light on the street as well when I saw this scene. Luckily the driver needed some time to complete his three point turn :)

@deniseescovino Thank you, that's so very kind :)

It's a beautiful shot of everyday(night?) life. I've been trying to embrace the grain, too, but it's difficult!
March 13th, 2011
@jezer Thanks. And yes, I know what you mean about the grain. I guess in some cases you just don't have an alternative.
March 13th, 2011
Nice "gritty" shot.
March 14th, 2011
@wietpruim Thanks. I've been complaining a bit about the grain in this shot but 'gritty' sounds a lot better :)
