Here is a close up of the bricks in the Frenchman's Tower from yesterday's photo. The bottom portion of the tower's bricks are carved with names and dates. I saw ones back as far as the 1920's. I speculate that since it is near Stanford University that perhaps at one time the tower's brick carving may be associated with fraternaty hazing.
