Chimney with helix

I just love the helix at the top and wonder what function it plays. Does anyone know? Looks like a four or five strand helix to me. The chimney is part of Homerton Hospital, East London.
nice ...

Cool shot...found this for the purpose of the helix...it directs the smoke. http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/75459/why-do-chimneys-have-these-spiral-wings

Isnt it great when we start seeing interest and beauty in the things that others would instantly dismiss. And the chimney in a hospital is an unusual candidate for a photo but it is indeed quite interesting ane elegant in its own way.
