The Rizal Monument is a memorial monument in Luneta Park in Manila, built to commemorate the Philippine National Hero, José Rizal.It was planned and constructed during the American colonial period of the Philippines in the early 20th century.
In 1905-1907, a design competition was held for Rizal monument. In 1908, Carlos Nicoli of Carrara, Italy's design “Al Martir de Bagumbayan” (To the Martyr of Bagumbayan) was announced as first prize winner, but the contract was awarded to the second place winner, “Motto Stella” (Guiding Star) by Swiss Sculptor Richard Kissling.
The shrine was finally unveiled on December 30, 1913 during Rizal’s 17th death anniversary. His poem, "Mi Ultimo Adios" ("My Last Farewell") is inscribed on the memorial plaque.
