Holt's Arcade

This is the shopping arcade on the ground level of India Buildings in Liverpool, built for the Holt Shipping Company, in the 1920-30s.

India Buildings occupies an entire city block, it was designed by Herbert Rowse who had travelled extensively in North America in the 1910s and worked briefly in New York and Chicago. It's easy to see his influences in the design of this building, it wouldn't look out of place on New York's 5th Avenue.

The building was in the news as it has recently been sold to a developer. I don't know what they're going to do with it so I wanted to take some photos while it's still accessible. It's a listed building so any development will have to keep the style of the building intact. The 9 floors of office space is almost empty of tenants now so I think it might become a hotel or apartments which would be great.
