Liver bird day by inthecloud5

Liver bird day

This is a view from the city centre looking towards the River Mersey and the Liver Building. I liked the way the sun was shining through the gap in the top of the building with the two liver birds in silhouette.

The liver bird is the symbol of Liverpool so there are lots of buildings in the city with birds featured in the design in some way so I'm trying to get photos of them all. My husband came with me as he knows where most of them are, very useful for me so I didn't have to keep looking at the map. We even managed to get into some places where there are designs inside, it was interesting to see inside places that are not normally accessible.

The birds on the Liver Building are 18ft high and face away from each other, one towards the river and the other towards the city, each carrying a sprig of seaweed in its beak. The story is that the one facing the river is the female, looking out for the sailors returning home and the one facing the city is the male looking to see if the pubs are open. That sounds about right!
Nice story with this breathtaking picture... Thanks for telling it!

Interesting to read about the liver birds - like a cormorant. When I hear the word Liver Bird, I think of Cilla Black!

Absolutely stunning shot. A big fav. Love the story too. I just told my husband what you had written about the Liver birds. (His father comes from Liverpool) and he said "That'll be right"

@maggiemae you're right, they are very like a cormorant.
'Our Cilla' was definitely a liver bird, she started out at the Cavern Club where I work, she was a cloakroom girl there before she became a singer!
