It's nearly a week since I saw the cygnets at the park so I thought I'd go back today to see how they were.
The whole family were there, sitting right in the middle of the path that runs around the lake, dad was hissing at anyone or anything that got near and there was a queue of people, pushchairs, prams, wheelchairs and dogs in both directions who were too afraid to go past. After a while a whole class of schoolgirls came along on their way to a PE lesson. I think the noise from their high pitched chatter drove the swans and their offspring back into the water so everyone could go on their way again.
Here's the cygnets trying to catch their mum, which was impossible as their little legs just can't keep up. I wish I'd been able to get away from all the commotion as easily!
Wonderful shot and lovely story. Normally if you walk slowly and carefully past the family, staying as far away from cygnets as possible, the Cob, (dad), will let you past. Pretend they are not there, don't look eye to eye with him. Once they realise you are not a real threat, they can be ridiculously tame. I have got photos of a very small Grand Monster standing next to a Swan stroking him.
@markp thanks. I think this guy was having a bad day, he raced off across the lake to attack a poor dog who was just having a paddle and minding his own business, he couldn't get out of the water fast enough!
