Mystery wild visitor

Still not getting much further than the garden for wildlife, at least there's a bit of variety in the bugs and bees I've seen.

I don't know what this is, possibly a type of bee, it seemed to be around every time I went into the garden today, landing on different plants but didn't seem to be going for pollen or nectar. I wonder if anyone can help solve the mystery?
it looks like a cross between a bee and a blow fly! great focus!

@rjb71 thanks Richard, proof that you really do learn something every day on 365! Thanks for the link, really interesting info, I've not knowingly seen one before, probably just thought they were bees.
