"Emma"

When I stepped outside today to take a picture of the newly blossoming flower on my Snow Fountain tree, the moment reminded me of my Great Great Auntie Emma for so many reasons. I was reminded by the crisp air and chirping birds of the early childhood mornings at her house when I would wake up and scramble to the window to see if I could spy any bunnies munching in her vegetable garden. The smell of the wet grass brought me back to helping her mow her massive lawn (and it didn't seem *that* massive until I was done). The town we settled in four years ago "feels" like the small town I grew up visiting her in, so, standing in my backyard this morning, thinking of her, only magnified that feeling. And then I looked more closely at my little tree. She is still small and a little frail looking but she has lasted longer than anything else I have planted in my backyard. Her branches droop completely to the ground but her spectacular blossoms carry her in a majestic way. ...I have a habit of naming my plants. I had not named this one yet but, this morning, I found it only fitting to allow the morning dew to christen her "Emma".

Sometimes things that are so clear to me are a little harder for other people to wrap their minds around. I was still skeptical on whether or not my topic/choice of photo of the day would have much meaning for anyone but me. The deal was sealed when I realized this was my 102nd photo of the year. I know that little piece of information will most likely be looked over by most. Yet, I can't help but imagine how many people will sit back and smile in wonder at the way life works sometimes when I also mention the fact that my Great Great Auntie Emma, who still lives in her own house and drives her own car, is also celebrating her birthday today. Which one, you ask? Why, her 102nd, of course.
