Bee type bug by jankoos

Bee type bug

Not sure what this - looked like a bee in front and a termite in the back.

He was quite large.

Today when I was weeding my garden, I apparently disturbed an underground wasps nest. I was stung, as was Rhoda, my poor dog. It wasn't fun and it hurt! We are not sure how we are going to deal with the nest - it's in my perennial bed under a rosebush.
He is huge and enormous eyes! Great picture Jan. we would get environmental health in I think, to deal with a wasp nest. I would contact the council anyway. Is there a similar type of service I over there!

What we did was wait until after dark when all the wasps had gone back to the nest, then tip some petrol down into the net and set it alight! Taking great care of course, but it worked! Amazingly clear macro!

Really wonderful detail and capture. I am so sorry you and Rhoda were stung by the wasps! I hope you do not still have pain from it.

No ideas about the wasps, but this guy doesn't look too happy, either!

Wow! He looks mad, but he's very pretty! Love his two-toned legs and the veins in his wings!

his eyes look forward facing and in front! That is odd! Great focus and love how he is crawling up the plant.

@andrina - Thanks Andrina - here you have to either hire an exterminator or deal with it yourself. I learned a little trick about blowing a brown paper sack up like a balloon and suspending near the house and nest so the wasps think it's a competitor nest and leave. Not sure if it worked but I have brown bags in various locations. Good thing you can't see in from the front - LOL.

@maggiemae - Thanks Maggiemae. We don't have fire engine service out here because of our bridge so try to not have open flames in the summer. It sounds tempting though - LOL. I think they have built the nest in a gopher passage which makes smothering them tricky, too. We have guests coming for my son's wedding and I don't want anyone to get stung so we are going to have to do something. Bad enough we have over 100,000 honeybees flying around - LOL - luckily they are not aggressive.

@steviepix @softeze @nanderson @dakotaburns @mamamia @jo13 @sansjuan @pflaume @vitamink @carolb @luvmynynix @espyetta - sorry about the bulk response - thanks for the comments on my bee critter. He didn't seem agressive - just strange. Lisa - some wasps do built nests underground - often in gopher and vole tunnels. These are usually very aggressive. Nita - thanks for the kind thoughts - Rhoda and I are both fine but we are both steering clear of the flowerbed.

I did the exact same thing, was digging up some ornamental grass and thought 'why is there a bunch of paper under there - you should have seen me run! Luckily I was only stung once - I have allergies and had never been stung. I think we left it exposed and the wasps eventually left.
