When we were kids we called these seeds 'helicopters'. We would throw them up in the air and watch them spin back down to the ground. I suppose the spinning was reminiscent of helicopter blades.
These were on an Acer Griseum (peeling bark maple). I did take a couple and throw them up in the air - not quite as riveting as I remember - LOL - but maybe these are not the same variety as the ones from my childhood.
