Natalie's Last Sermon at UUCA by jbritt

Natalie's Last Sermon at UUCA

I photographed the dusting of snow on flowers as I biked to church this morning. The stops made me even later than usual for my ushering job, but I knew the snow would be gone by the time service was over. Fortunately, the other members of my team were early and I wasn't missed too much. I arrived in plenty of time to distribute programs, and the candelabra is down for cleaning and repairs so I didn't even miss lighting the candles.

I considered using a photo of forsythia or cherry blossoms or a plant that resembles may apples. However, I decided this is more appropriate since it is Natalie's last sermon as the intern minister at UUCA. She has been part of our community for nine months, and we will miss her terribly. Fortunately, she will be nearby at Fairfax UU Church.

I heard on the radio that today's Kite Festival at the Washington Monument was cancelled due to snow.
I think it was a good choice.

Triangle of kites leads the eye left to right, up to down, across the visual landscape to the focal point. In another perspective, the bright colors might have drowned out the speaker, but instead she is featured. The candle grounds and directs the eyes' journey across the image.

And don't those kites, those bright colors, in this context, represent the kind of energy Natalie brought to her job and to your spiritual community? Our time with one other is as ephemeral as a kite dance on a March morning, but isn't it lovely!
