Long Distance Cyclist from Pittsburgh

This is not the best photo I took on Wednesday but it has a good story that will be lost if I don't write it here.

I biked to a doctor appointment about 15 miles from home and Nadine met me on the way back. It was hot, so we stopped a few times to rest. While we were resting in Georgetown, this woman crossed the bridge over the C&O canal and was struggling to carry her loaded bike up the steps. I helped her up and then tried to help her figure out how to get where she was going.

She had started from Pittsburgh 10 days ago and rode along the Great Allegheny Passage trail and the C & O canal towpath. They rode a total of over 320 miles in 10 days, about 30-40 unpaved miles per day. They stayed in B&Bs along the way. She got ahead of the other three members of her group. They were headed for the National Headquarters for the C&O canal and then to Thompson's Boat house. For some reason, she thought she had to cross Key Bridge to get there, but I told her both of those locations were on this side of the river. We left as she was talking to one of her companions on the cell phone.

What a great accomplishment! And they timed it well with the weather--no rain and they missed most of the heat waves before and after their trip.

I'm surprised I don't know her name because Nadine usually learns everyone's name.
Joan what a great story! Looks like she has a hybrid bike? You are so sweet for helping her...her lucky day! Thank you for sharing this photo and the story!

Yes it is a hybrid. She rode on the canal towpath, which is unpaved. So these are the right size tires for the trip.
