Astor Restaurant

As my husband and I were eating dinner, I started to explain the color exercise from the Contemplative Photography book. It's easier to show than explain, so I looked around for an example. This is basically the view from my seat in the restaurant.

The point of the exercise is to envision your image before you lift the camera but it that is very hard for me, especially when I'm engaged with someone else at the same time. (One point of the book is that you should be photograph mindfully and not try to think too much so this was not a great example of the process.) This was the sixth shot I took of the wall in front of me, but at least I knew when to stop since this was also my last shot of that view. I had to make my husband move to the side so I could get a corner of his chair without any of him in it. It just didn't look right before I asked him to move. I think part of the point is to hear and trust your intuition. That will take a bit more practice for me, but I will get it eventually.

Before we went to dinner, I picked out a backlit canna leaf shot that I took this afternoon, but I like this one better. Here's a link to my second choice photo of the day: http://www.flickr.com/photos/17971166@N03/5965581079/in/photostream

We hardly ever go out to eat, so this turned the evening into a special occasion. I don't usually like restaurant food and I forgot that going out provides a chance to talk without interruptions. The food was fine, but the conversation was a lot better. We didn't discuss anything special, but it seems like we don't have enough time together since we are both so busy. I'm glad to include a reminder in my 365 project.
I like this impressionistic scene, it conveys a trenchant impression of context with very little information. Fabulous geometric composition with analogous colors; the wood and brick provide rich warm textural accents. The light is so perfect that the trim catches textural reflections from the brick.

very haunting somehow, makes me wonder what is going on and who is sitting nearby what are the stories of this place

I like how simple and yet perfect this photo is. So many straight lines, but they all blend so perfectly together...even the brick. Well done!
