Birch Bark Baskets

These are small baskets, handmade by a local Inupiaq Eskimo Aana (grandmother) in my village. She harvests the birch bark and willow roots (for the stitching) from trees that grow right here in our back yard. They will always be precious treasures to me.
Oh how exquisite. They certainly are treasures. Is that lichen still on the bark

@benard @thistle @vera365 Thanks for the positive comments. @cruiser Chris, they often leave the lichen on the bark. Those are my favorites! And Vera, we ARE very close to Russia after all, so maybe they are similar.

We watched ladies create baskets similar to these on one of our trips to Alaska. Absolutely fascinated us. Such beautiful pieces!
