The ridge of dirt in the foreground is the shoreline edge of island. Everything beyond is the frozen ocean. This is a whaling village of Inupiaq Eskimos, but they haven't gotten a whale for decades. We arrived to huge snowdrifts after several Christmas blizzards and no running water. The water has been sorted out, but it continues to snow!
