This is a rather strange effect. It has flattened the rose, which I enjoy, but done something very peculiar to the foliage. Would this be more successful if you did a tight crop removing the foliage? It may not of course, and it is your choice!
@marshwader Thanks for commenting. Not a great photo (and, if it wasn’t for 365 I wouldn’t have pursued it) but I did quite like the papery effect, and the way the colour in the dried-up rose was echoed in the background. I tried different compositions to minimise the background clutter, but needed to keep the drooping petal in the frame and wanted to keep some greenery as a colour contrast to the main subject. Shallow dof is too haphazard on my phone, choosing random bits of the image to defocus, so it is what it is.
