Panama hats are actually made in Cuenca! They are exported all over the world and were used by the workers who built the Canal to protect themselves from the sun. Making them is still mainly a home occupation in surrounding villages, and then they are finished off in Cuenca. This man at the main exporter’s business was sorting and counting unfinished hats.
