Tonight the stars aligned like rarely before in order to bring a bunch of amazing people together. It was an evening of laughter, delicious food, delightful wine, guiltless rowdiness and incredible conversation. My two kids even were involved throughout, instead of being excused to go play after they ate – having meaningful exchanges with some of the adults. We had just met four of the guests, but sometimes you just really connect with people in such a way that you can't believe you haven't known each other forever. It was the epitome of perfect.
The king and queen were crowned because they’d found the two hidden figurines in the "Galette des Rois" (Kings’ Cake, an almond / frangipane & puff pastry dessert), and so they were king and queen for the evening. It stems from a very old custom which originated with Roman celebrations where one of the slaves was allowed to be "king for a day"… and eventually was tied to Epiphany (“Three Kings’ Day”), although it seems to be celebrated by various people throughout France regardless of your spiritual status (typically on January 6th which is the twelfth day of Christmas).
