You are so lucky to see these bird and have the opportunity to photograph them, but you are just missing them to get a really good image. Firstly are you shooting in RAW? Secondly are you using Aperture Priority? Then you may need to have a telephoto lens that allows you to get in closer and preferably with image stabilisation. Push the ISO higher so that the shutter speed is about 500 or above. If you are shooting against a bright sky, compensate to the right about 2/3 of a stop to 1 stop (so that the image is lighter), but take care if the subject is within foliage as the image will be too light and potentially burnt out. Keep the metering to 'evaluative', use the A1 servo focus and try and use continuous shooting. It is hard to get right if you are a novice. In the UK we have many camera clubs where you can go out as part of a group and the more experienced photographers help you develop in the field! Maybe you have something similar in the USA? Don't give up, remember we are all on a journey, some further on than others! But we are all moving forward! Good luck!
