I visited the National World War II Memorial on my lunchtime walk today. The wind was blowing cold, which made it easy to get a clear shot like this. I gave special focus to my home state of Iowa. This memorial is on the Mall in Washington, D.C., and was opened in 2004.
I am always moved when I see war memorials, especially ones dedicated to the Great War. Every UK village has one. I saw one yesterday in a very small parish, 15 names were on the memorial, 5 with the same surname!
I loved this memorial on our visit to Washington DC in May 2011 with Elenita. You have captured its textures and patterns. And Deb's right, catching the flag outstretched is a very nice touch!
@davydo Thanks, Dave! It is a lovely monument, especially when the fountain is running. It snowed here on the morning that I took this photo. I accidentally left my gloves drying on my air vent in the office and came out to find that the weather had turned windy and cold. Brrr! The benefit was the snapping flags. :)
Beautiful memorial and I love how you composed this shot. You captured so much in one single photo...love the light/shadow, color/texture and your shout out to Iowa! I'm from Iowa and the weather there, even though it's cold, looks better than ours! :)
@bluemoon Thanks, Paula. I've been keeping up on the Iowa weather, which has been remarkably, relentlessly, and outrageously cold and snowy this year. If you're in Iowa now, stay warm!
