Fiddlehead Ferns
The Fiddlehead ferns are unfurling in the Virginia forests. I found this little stand in the woods along Powell's Creek trail at Leesylvania State Park.

Live in Virginia. Work in DC. Happily surrounded by historical sites.

Pretty picture. We have these in Washington and they are almost like a weed though. They spread all over and take over my other vines.

Thanks, Carolyn. I understand that some people gather them just as they come out of the ground to sauté and eat! Ever tried it? It might be good vengeance if they try to take over your other plants. Ha. Here, in Virginia, they are not so ubiquitous.

They grow in shady glens and, in this case, not far from a creek bed.

In Japan, we eat ferns from the mountains that look like tiny versions of these.

I read that these could be eaten when they first appear and before they begin unfurling. How do they taste?

Thanks for showing them in the wild. I used to see them for edible sale in supermarkets in Canada but wasn't game to try them. A nice shot.
