"The volley fired by a young Virginian in the backwoods of America set the world on fire."
Horace Walpole
In 1754, an incident at nearby Jumonville Glen and a battle at the fort pictured here, known as Fort Necessity, instigated the French and Indian War. It also set off a seven-year-long war between the British and the French. The fort was built under George Washington's command to protect supplies being used to build a road to extend British influence into the region of current-day southwestern Pennsylvania. George Washington was involved in both the Jumonville incident and the Fort Necessity battle.
@eyesmile Thanks, Gena. I was surprised it was so small also! It was built in haste and proved not to be successful. Washington surrendered to the French here. It was the only time he would surrender in his military career.
@ellida So true about the scale of today's warfare. It is amazing that events in this far off corner in the woods of the New World would cause such a long war between Britain and France. But if it's favorite hobby, then seven years may not have been long enough. ;)
Every country should have a hobby and Britain treats war with the French that way I think :-D
