Architect of the Capitol Charles Bulfinch designed a series of gatehouses for the U.S. Capitol building in 1825. They originally stood on the U.S. Capitol grounds, but were removed when Frederick Law Olmsted renovated the Capitol grounds in 1874. In 1880, the two main gatehouses were moved to their present locations in the President's Park South, not far from the White House. The one pictured here is on the corner of Constitution Avenue and 17th Street.
What an interesting building/ history. it looks much older, like something Napeolon would of ordered built to honour him somehow. Very Grand for it mundane purpose .
@kiwi_big_bear Thanks, Shawn. It looks older than it is because the sandstone construction is wearing more quickly. And it looks quite out of place where it is now, next to a series of regular food trucks on the left, which I left out of the frame. :)
@carolyns Thanks, Carolyn. I've never seen the door open. The little building looks quite mysterious. I've always imagined that it houses the secret entrance to an underground passageway to the White House. Ha.
I agree with @thresheg -- the details you give us is always informative. I wonder what an alternate shot would show us -- perhaps a 3/4 view with more front, even if you had to clip part of the back?
