Julien Dubuque, the founder of my hometown, Dubuque, Iowa, had a close relationship with the local Meskwaki indians and married Chief Peosta's daughter, Potosa. In 1810, when Dubuque died from pneumonia, the Meswaki buried him, according to their custom, in a burial mound atop a picturesque bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. In 1897, an Old Settler's Association from Dubuque built this limestone monument to mark the burial site.
Superb historical documentation Karen! Love the suggestion of height in the background of the shot with the overview of the Mississippi without actually seeing the drop.
Wonderful historical narrative! So neat to see all of the nice sights in Dubuque from your perspective, as you grew up there. I hop to visit soon and am looking for good photography opportunities. :o
