U.S.-Africa Summit Protest by khawbecker

U.S.-Africa Summit Protest

A group of Mauritanians protesting outside the State Department, where the U.S.-Africa Summit meetings were held in D.C. today.

From what I could hear, they were demanding reforms from that country's leader, who is in town for the summit. They were making demands of Pres. Obama and the U.S. too, but I could not hear the details. In 1981, Mauritania was the last country in the world to abolish slavery. Slaveholding was not made a crime until seven years ago. To this day, some estimate that nearly 20% of the population is held in slavery.
Nice shot of the gathering....not too familiar with their grievance, but wish them well.

It's good to have a window into day to day views in D.C.

@eyesmile @taffy @cljs @mittens @tosee @ladymagpie @carolmw @deu49097 Thank you for your comments! It was a bit out of the ordinary for me. All of the police in the area made me nervous about taking pictures, but I pushed ahead. :)
