Taken in the old Montezuma, Kansas, graveyard out in the country between two wheat fields. It's a sad comment on pioneer life. Someone remembered and cared enough to plant iris behind the stone.
Life on the frontier was hardest on the very young. The little Montezuma cemetery has a number of these sad little graves of children who never had a chance to live. We visit every year to decorate the graves of Richard's maternal grandparents and great grandparents, so I've had a chance to explore it thoroughly. Doesn't take long - it's no bigger than some back yards. Sadly, we are almost the only family members who know where it is, which is down a dirt road surrounded by wheat fields. The emergency squad made the county give a letter designation recently, but until then, you found it by feel.
@tremerryn Thank you! Decoration Day, as it used to be known, meant a lot to my mother-in-law. We have made the rounds of the cemeteries to decorate the family graves ever since she passed away. As I said, I don't think very many of the other family members know where this little cemetery is. The rest of the family is buried in a big cemetery in another town. We visit there to decorate also.
