Located on Ship Island, off the coast of Mississippi. Building began in 1857, but it wasn't completed until 1866. Now in the hands of the National Park Service. Ship is a very small island - really just a large sand bar. I'm glad to have visited again. The fort has survived a number of hurricanes, but there is always the good chance that the next one will take it.
