This is purely a mood photo because I just needed a calming sight and this sure did the trick. It was another manic Monday work-wise and it was dark and cloudy all day. I headed to the beach for a late afternoon walk and found this pink stripe on the horizon. I'm kind of fascinated by this phenomenon because I never knew this occurred and now I've seen it twice in one week.
@michaelelliott Yep, it's for real. I was just as amazed to see it in real life, Michael. We've recovered from the election, but phew that was stressful. I've been a little crazy with work and family stuff, but trying to hang in here because taking photos forces me to take a break and it makes me happy.
@jsw0109 You made me curious so I looked it up. I've been studying light and the sky alot lately because it's been so darn cloudy and dark. I've noticed glimpses of blue sky and sun even on the cloudiest days proving that just because I can't see it, it doesn't mean that it isn't still there. But this might be a bit different.
The best explanation I can find is that the earth casts its shadow on its atmosphere as a dark band in the sky near the horizon that can only be seen at sunrise and sunset. This is especially noticeable over the ocean. In nice weather this is seen as a dark blue band. What I captured is a related phenomenon called the “Belt of Venus.” It’s a pink band that is visible above the dark blue line of the earth’s shadow in the same part of the sky.
