Another Big thing from the road -The Big Lobster (aka Larry) - Kingston SE - South Australia
The big lobster is a particularly interesting big thing, as according to local legend it is about three times larger than intended. Larry stands approx 17m tall and was opened in 1979. Legend has it that the person who made him misread the dimensions, he made metres where feet were intended. He is made of steel and fibreglass.
The Big Lobster is one of 5 big things that featured on the Big Things series of postage stamps in 2007. The restaurant here is supposed to be good.
On other news today is day 1 of me quitting smoking. The problem is I really really like smoking. I know it is bad for me, but the big incentive is the price, when I was away on Christmas Island it was approx $3 per pack, back home closer to $16.00. So, time to quit. I've opted for cold turkey. I have previously quit for 5 months in 2010 and over a year in 1994. I know I can do it, I just have to make it through these first few days. And remember that i want to stop smoking as much as I really enjoy it. So soon I am going to be revolted by the smell of smokers again. Just as I was in 2010. Next will be a diet as I am sure I will gain weight during the initial quit phase. Bugger!
my boyfriend and I love this shot! we have pet blue lobsters and so anything to do with lobsters we absolutely love! great shot and thanks for the info. Maybe one day when I go to Australia I will be able to take my own photo! :) Good luck on quitting smoking! You can do it! I have never been a smoker, but have had many close people in my life that have quit. It is possible!
Big things are so funny! I love the way the mouldiness on this guy's back looks so real :-)
I quit cold turkey in '99 when they went from $5 up to $8 a pack. You can do it!!

Funny story about that lobster there. Good luck with your quitting smoking, I know how hard it is to break bad habits that one really enjoys, so will be rooting for you.
This made me laugh - have you seen 'love actually' the film? In it the children have been given their parts in the school nativity and one is the Christmas lobster... it's kind of gone down in school folklore if we have a child without a part....!!
Good luck on quitting smoking - you're absolutely right to do it and if you need a support team you know we are all here!! :)
PS Love the photo!
This is such a laugh! I'm glad that there are people in the phoot so I tell just how gargantuan Larry is.
(As for quitting smoking: I'm 150% for you! it is a mega-difficult addiction to break, but YOU WILL SUCCEED. And you may not gain any weight at all, but you might be cranky. :-D.) Take good care, Les
I lurve Australia's Big Things! And the Big Lobster is my all time favourite! I always stop and take a photo. Thanks for sharing! And good luck with the quit.
@glimpses@jenrobcarr@filsie65@lotus1922@kmwilliams thanks for your support, 365 people are wonderful. It is not fun, but I keep thinking how much money I will save and the camera gear and awesome glass I could buy with the money I save.
@lbmcshutter - ahhh but you have an excuse at being cranky at Christmas. And they can call you ol' Scrooge as much as you like, you are cranky for a good reason!
