Perhaps the most interesting feature here is the situation of the two churches, St Mary's and St Martin's, built close beside the road and separated by only a few yards of land which forms the boundary of the two parishes. Persistent legend has it that the churches were built separately by two quarrelling sisters but local historians throw cold water on the idea. On the other hand, there seems to be no alternative explanation for the two churches to be rubbing shoulders in the same churchyard, so the theory of the warring sisters makes as good a story as any.
