@dmcrisp - they don't actually, they will go through your pockets and bag if given the chance - but they are looking for anything edible. I've never seen them steal anything else anyway. The monkeys near Uluwatu is a whole other ball game though! They will take anything - sunglasses, hats, phones you name it, then the robbed tourist will have to buy a bag of peanuts and negotiate an exchange with the monkeys - kinda fun to look at actually :)
