Since I started doing this project my husband and I started having conversations like this:
Bill (as he watches me wander through the basement): “What are you looking for, Hon?”
Me: “Just dead spiders.”
Bill: “Oh. Did you look in the window sill?” He doesn’t even question me further. I guess he’s getting used to it.
Anyway, I find my dead spider and scoop it onto a piece of paper. Halfway up the stairs, I realize the spider is in fact still alive and ambling toward me. I hurry to the kitchen and set him on the counter so I can get my camera. Of course by the time I got back he had wandered off. I crawled around the floor looking for him and finally spotted him. He blended quite well with the wood floor so this was not a simple task. I started taking pictures, but he was very, very fast and through my macro lens he seemed frighteningly large and way too close. Just as I was really getting nervous and about to retreat, my cat, Frankie, jumped in and, well, he ate my subject. So this is the best picture I took of him, and I don’t have time to take more pictures today. If there were any visible details in the picture, you’d understand just how brave I was. I guess I’m not quite ready for National Geographic yet.
Love it! Love your story and this is about as good as any picture of a spider would get taken by me - but of course, there will be NO spider pictures taken by me -ever. You were brave and the attempt is a great add to your project.
LOL, it is so true, as we photographers wander about daily looking for things to photograph our family and friends make us chuckle as they make some of their comments about our strange actions, but as you said, they quickly grow accustomed to our strange behaviors.
haha! I understand but no one else seems to understand why I am always poking around for something! It's good that your husband understands now. I'm glad that you found your spider!
It looks like a black widow, but it's hard to tell, but you got a nice shot and the shadow under his belly on the floor reflects. Have fun with you macro, I have the 100mm macro f/2.8L IS lens too and love mine.
Love your story. Like you I wander around the house looking for something to use as my picture for the day. Usually it is late in the day when I haven't found anything yet. My wife, after over a year of this, has become accustomed to me carrying my camera around the house looking for something to inspire me.
Try a container from Ferrero Roche chocolate. I've been using one as my insect trapper. Its slippery and they can't get out. With the lid on for a while they get sleepy. I have an earwig in mine at the moment waiting for him to get sleepy so I can get some pictures.
I'm not afraid of spiders per se, but I don't think I'm ready to track them down for photos yet. You are a brave and adventurous soul! Loved the story!
@lisjam1 not one of my favorite things, but good for pictures.
