I never thought I’d ever be in hot pursuit of a big ugly bug with a camera in hand. Never. Ever. When my stealth mission to take a photo of a male goldfinch failed, I heard a loud rustling in the leaves of the tree. I stepped closer and found this cicada. He’s really awesome and completely gross at the same time. It reminds of when my son was small. We found a huge cicada sitting on the sidewalk. A whole group of us circled it to examine it more closely when Andrew suddenly lurched forward and stomped on it. We all groaned in unison at the sickening crunching sound it made. Andrew announced proudly “I step on he!”.
The cicada is the sound of summer..and while they are ugly they are quite and amazing bug to study. This is a great capture! All I have been able to capture are the skeletal ones.
I must join in the chorus- love the sounds; not fond of their appearance. I guess God gave them a nice sound to make up for their not-so-nice looks. (o: Absolutely love the story about your son! Boys!! Great shot- the detail is awesome, or should I say ugly?
Look at the wings! It's like glass.... very cool photo. Ewww, though, about Andrew stepping on one, I can only imagine the sound. Back in 2007 when we had the 21 year infestation (or however long it is between them... 18 years? I don't know) my kids FREAKED OUT about all the cicadas.... it was all I could do to get them from the house to the car and back again...
@erikadee We had a huge infestation, too, and practically every surface outside was covered in them. It was not only deafening, but they smell horrible! Did you feel like you were in a cicada version of "The Birds"?
Creepy! But great capture. I accidentially stepped on one of these huge ugly things the other morning and it just sat that and spun and made gobs of noise! ICK!
