I had a visitor drop by this morning, and he brought something to eat along with him. I saw this hawk hanging out on top of the bird feeder this morning. I snapped a quick photo through my sliding glass door, but I really wanted a better shot. I got my camera ready and was just about to open the door a crack when my easily excitable labrador jumped at the glass and scared the hawk away. I do owe the dog an apology, though, as I disparaged him on Facebook. I didn’t know I’d actually gotten this shot until I got home.
What a beautiful hawk & a great photo too! I saw a Red-tailled hawk today but wasn't fast enough with the camera. He was gone before I could do anything other than admire him.
Excellent shot! We had a hawk that temporarily took up residence in our backyard in Atlanta...as long as he was hanging around we didn't see any other birds, squirrels, chipmunks, etc around. I was kind of glad when he left and the others could come out of hiding. :)
Great shot Lisabell. Jeff and I had fun comparing your shot to our birdbook and we think you've got a Northern Goshawk there. This one is probably still immature, but the eye marking was what cinched it for us. The Cooper's eye stripe is blurred, but the Goshawk is sharper. Anyway that's our amatuer bird watcher opinion. @olivetreeann Actually I confirmed with a colleague that it is a Cooper's hawk. Her husband actually travels the world studying and writing about birds, and he concurred. I don't know that I've ever seen a Goshawk around here, but who knows.
@lisjam1 - often, when you are out walking, it is the little birds that let you know when predators are around. Around here, I know when the big Lizards are around because the Bee Eaters will dive them and make quite a bit of noise!
