I went to the orchard today and bought some apple cider and some Indian corn. I’m just amazed that one ear of corn can be covered with so many colors of kernels. In this day of political correctness I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to call it Native American corn now. Whatever it is called, it’s really pretty!
Wonderful! It's beautiful! My dad grew some this year and he said that the correct term was "Ornamental Corn," so that's what I called it. I took a picture of it last weekend just as he was shucking it. Interesting, no two corns were exactly alike although the seeds came from the same package.
@mrssmith I searched the internet and saw the term ornamental corn, but Indian corn was still predominant. Ornamental makes sense since we don't eat it. I bet it's fun shucking it because you never know what you're going to get!
@scrappydoo Apparently, it is edible but pretty flavorless. I've never seen it fresh although @mrssmith just commented that her dad grows it. Carla, have you ever eaten it?
First of all, Great Shot! the colors are amazing, and the lines are so tidy. Secondly, I'm about dying laughing over the pretty, but flavorless, inedible corn. Why DO people grow it then? Really, just for decorations? I've never thought about it... how odd! :) But I'm glad they do!
@erikadee Yeah, I guess that's the only reason they grow it. My daughter asked me why I was buying it since it is somewhat useless. Duh, I'm 289 photos into this project and she had to ask? I understand that people like to decorate with it now, but why did Native Americans grow it? I'm betting decorating was pretty low on their to-do list.
