This Cartridge No. 4 is quite a bit larger than Vigilant, and the wonderfull craftmanship made me gasp when I opened the cover today. This model was on sale between 1897 and 1907.
The model could use both glass plate and 5 x 4" film. It was actually the first camera to use paper backed 104 roll film - shaped like a shotgun 'cartridge' (hence the model name).
It was also the first model to use red leather on the bellows - obtained from Russia where the chromium tanning process and bright red color had been pioneered. Red leather was used by Kodak in a variety of cameras until 1913, when all bellows became black (made from American and European leather).
