The camera settings challenge ( http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/12633/camera-settings-challenge-3#comments), inspired me to think about flash exposure compensation and light balance.
Here I used my speedlight off camera at 1/16 power at 45 degrees to the subject, aimed at the background. To balance the shadows, on the other side I placed a desk lamp using a paper towel & white plastic bag as a diffuser - moving it in and out to control the amount of light.
The red contrast helped the focus - even at f25, focus was challenging because of the many layers of imperfectly curved glass. The four glasses are placed at increasing distances apart.
I think this is a little underexposed, (always room for improvement!!) but I had a really enjoyable hour creating the shot.
Do try & visit the challenge page - there are some great tips for getting the best shots using flash.
@agima (Brendan Maunder ) tagged so I could say thankyou for your generous assistance to the community. Even though I routinely use flash compensation so will not tag this for csc-3, reading the thread has been instructive, and inspired me to read even more about several other flash techniques I am yet to tackle. :))
I love it when you get deeply into these techniques and things, Lyn! If there is one person I can think of on 365 who has jumped straight into learning all aspects of photography and post it's you! I envy your energy and consistency! This is fabulous :)
@ltodd Why thanks for your kind words, I really do appreciate it. I try to give as much time as I can back into the community to help others walk the road I have walked but with less stones and shoes on. :)
I am glad it has inspired you to try other things and share these experiences with us.
Nice shot with the glass and such a very cool idea. :)
