When I saw this lavender sky the other day, I remembered that picture and researched Heyson, and was pleased to find many other paintings of his that I actually liked very much. Heyson often painted the South Australian countryside in the harsh mid-day sunlight, but with a low contrast approach.
My 'colour memory' of Tokyo are primarily bold primary colours, which is such a contrast to the soft pink-pastel light I associate with the buildings & harbour of Venice for example.
So, if knowing a place, is to embrace it's quality of lighting, what country-colour memories do you have of your travels, or your hometown?
So gorgeous and I love Heysen painting a great deal! My most vivid memory of "light" was an early June when we were in Tasmania. If a horizon could be thought of as a straight line, the sun rose on the left, making only a small arc across the sky and set on the right. It was like the golden hour all day long!
This is so painterly...and although I hadn't thought quite so explicitly in terms of place and color, my favorite light is that of the Hudson Valley in New York...there is a golden hue to it, even at times other than the golden hours.
