lovin in the gardens by ltodd

lovin in the gardens

When I first saw street photography I thought things like "thats nice/clever/interesting, - but isn't it a bit voyeuristic?" Now that I have tackled it, I have found it is actually the opposite feeling. To do it properly, you need to observe and empathise 'with' the subject - and not just look 'at' the subject(s). I certainly did not expect that!
The strong sunlight and very dark shadows made the exposure a bit tricky for this shot.

I think maybe I had better not take anymore 'lovin' shots though... :D

"Street photography is a game that is never played twice in the same manner, a game that is you against the world, a game that you control - you decide when to start, when to finish or when to have a tea break." Errol Lyons-Rainey, see

Au contraire. Do not stop!! Street photography to me is celebrating the normality of life and humans. It is honest and requires bravery and respect on the part of the photographer. I think your street shots are fantastic.

@deens Thankyou Nadine, street photography has definitely been the biggest and most unexpected lesson for me so far. I agree with you that street photography is (and always should be) very respectful of the subject, and previously I never would have understood how that was possible by taking such a photograph. It is a powerfully humbling and 'connecting' experience that has made me acutely aware that every shot will tell their story better when the photographer knows what they want to 'say' (whatever that may be) before taking the shot.

@ltodd Exactly. I am finding that the more I explore different genres of photography, the more I am in awe of those who excel in those disciplines. It is truly an art form. In street photography, the photo acts as a channel between the subject and the viewer, it's up to the photographer to connect the two in a way that is true to the emotion. If it resonates with you, keep doing it.

I love your street photos! This is a wonderful scene and your thoughts on the connection are both wonderful and inspiring for me. I think a lot of that connection for me is that you need to anticipate what they are going to do, so you start to really "see" them. It's exhilarating!
