The Gothics on Vacation

On the informational sign in front of this 25 foot painted aluminum statue:

"The familiar subjects in Grant Wood's iconic painting 'American Gothic' are three-dimensionally rendered in Seward Johnson's monumental sculpture 'God Bless America'.

As arguably the most noted American Regionalist painters and an Iowa native, Wood commonly depicted Depression-era Midwesterners as hardworking, stern and proud. He famously conjured the identities of people who would have lived in the house by incorporating the images of his sister and his dentist. Seen in the background of Wood's painting is a Carpenter Gothic style house which provides insight into the painting's title."

(Behind the sculpture is Peoria's Riverfront Museum.)

"As an imaginative and surprising reveal to the historic painting, Seward Johnson reinterprets Wood's characters as sophisticated travelers accompanied by a tattered suitcase with stickers from all over the world. After their extensive travels, one may conclude they are more resolved in America's future than ever. In this location, overlooking the Peoria river valley, Johnson's 'God Bless America' surveys the richest agricultural land in the world."

My 5'8" tall husband was shorter than the suitcase when standing next to the couple...
Just read that last bit, geez, they must be bloody tall!

Ha! fun with the suitcase! Interesting reading all of your information. The real Gothic House is only about 40 miles from here. My grandmother was an artist and knew Grant Wood.

@lynnz That is just the coolest info, that your grandmother knew Grant Wood and that you live not too far from the famous house. I read an article by a gal who lived in the house for a short while; she said it was very interesting having people frequently taking pictures of the place she called home.
