This is who I met today while walking. Poor thing wasn't pleased about having his picture taken. He puffed up his quills for me though.

@ldpaul Linda, he was really just scared. I took quick pictures and moved away because I really hated to disturb or frighten him.

@murnane Marg, this is a young porcupine. I live in a wooded area and they are around quite often.

@tangie Angela, he did run....but when they are scared they go up a tree. He was a young one and went up a dead tree that wasn't too high. I took some quick shots and left him alone.

I would have been going in the opposite direction, I believe as long as they are facing you, they shoot the quills away from you..I think? Anyways, great shot!
