I recently bought a canon 50mm F/1.8 lens. I had been holding out for the 1.4 but, I'd rather be warm. :) So, I bought heating fuel with the other money. Anyway, I haven't used this lens much. I would love tips or hints. So far, I love the results. But, I have no idea the "ideal" shots for lens. Portraits? I'm thinking.....
Is this siding? Cool shot! That is really funny, because I was JUST researching lenses and I think I've decided on a 50mm, but can't decide b/w 1.8 or shell out the $$ for a 1.4.
@cristina3611 Yes, cedar shingles! Anyway....I'm no pro. So, I read the reviews on Amazon. And I couldn't help but be convinced that the 1.8 was for me! I paid $116, free shipping. So, I can't complain. I don't regret my decision at all. It's a well built lens. Some reviews complain of plastic crap. But, you'd really have to be hard on stuff to break this. It's already flown off my passenger seat!
@mandyj92 This looks like a good use of this lens. You will enjoy the large aperture of this lens. As a portrait lens it works great to throw the background out of focus thus making the subject stand out. Also, play with it in low light situations. At 1.8 it is 4 times faster than the 3.5 on most kit lenses and over 8 times faster than 5.6. Have fun! (N)
@cristina3611 Hi Cristina. I am no expert and don't own the 1.8, but I do own the 1.4. I love my 1.4! This lens is almost always in my bag. I chose the faster of the two based on reviews that the 1.4 was sharper. That said, the 1.8 is quite good - especially for the money. The other reason I chose it was the faster and quieter ring USM focusing. This gives you full time manual focusing without switching from autofocus. Just my opinion for what it is worth. :-D (N)
It's funny Amanda, my debate was over the 50mm or 35 mm. I eventually bought the 35mm 1.8 I am very happy with it, but might still get the 50mm someday. A prime lens takes a sharper photo. I use mine mostly for close ups; flowers, grand babies, butterflies, but you can use your 50mm for everything. I've heard it called the perfect "walking around" lens. Experiment with it, you'll love it I'm sure.
I had a nifty fifty week 4 weeks back where it never left the camera. Agree with all the above comments. Persevere and you will find it will be on your camera all the time!!
