Panning Fail by mandyj92

Panning Fail

My get pushed partner challenged me to do a panning shot. I read up on it a tiny bit. Ok, not much. Obviously. I need some tips! Helpful hints! I am not tagging this for the challenge. It's awful. I'm going to try again tomorrow. Thanks in advance for any advice. :)
I will be interested to read tips also. I know nothing about panning shots.

I am no expert but if I remember correctly from a film course I did many years ago your shutter speed needs to be about 1/250 and aperture about f5.6. Set your camera to al focus or al servo. Aim at car as it is approaching and follow through otherwise set to auto sports programme.

It's way harder than it looks! I'd suggest searching "panning" tags and then checking out the Exif info. The only one I really ever got to work was holding a teddy bear in one hand and the camera in the other and spinning in circles. I was able to maintain the focus on the bear while the background was moving. It's kind of a cheat, but it is panning. Check it out: http://365project.org/kwind/365/2012-04-23

Amanda, focus mode should be AI servo, so the camera maintains focus. I would go shutter priority mode and select a fast shutter speed. Get focus nice and early, following the movement with your upper body. Still keep panning when you press the shutter, don't go still..follow through. Hope this helps.
